1990 Honda Civic I was given a free car,and car won't start

I am disabled and on $600 a month income. Can't afford a mechanic. I personally replaced the oil pan gasket today. After I refilled the oil and started it up to take off ramps, it died while gas pedal was engaged, now check engine light is always on. When key is turned on it turns over but will not start. I have not yet checked the fuel line or spark. Have any tips?? give me a systems check list. I have never worked on a honda. car has 262,678 miles on it, ran real good,( leaked oil ), for 1 day then croaked. Motor had a lot of power,oil doesn't smell burnt,no motor leaks. It seems it is not getting gas.
