1987 Honda Civic no longer going into reverse

My 1987 Honda Civic no longer goes into reverse. It is an automatic transmission. It still goes into Drive, Neutral, 1st, 2nd and Drive. Help me?

The shifter handle moves freely?

Any problem before that happened?

The shifter handle moves fine it just doesn't slip into gear. It stopped working the other day, I then tried starting it in Neutral and it worked after that. The next day none of the gears worked and then they began working again. Now just reverse does not work.

It has made an odd, loud sound once and a while when going from Park into Reverse.
