Hello,
there is a strange knocking noise, feels like it is just behind the dashboard. Not related to pace of engine or tires clicking, happens sporadically at any speed. I have searched high and low, it almost sounds like a trapped stone? It is on the drivers side. Comes on with or without aircon, regardless of if screen wipers are on or now. Most perplexing!

Thanks if you can help!

Is it a loud knock, metal against metal or other? It is obvious by your comment about the screen wipers that you are not in the US so is there another meaning to a "trapped stone"?

Hi, yep, you're correct, not in the US long, I've come over from England for a couple of years.

Trapped stone - I meant it sounds like a small pebble caught in the dash board somewhere///
its not that loud, it sounds more like creaking/knocking. Almost like plastic expanding?
It is more annoying than worrying as I;ve put a few miles away since it started and it doesn't appear to be the engine. Perplexing!
Many thanks

A thought that comes to mind is something that has fallen in to the defroster vent. Could be rolling and hitting inside.

I had a similar noise a long time ago. Took quite some time to figue it out. It was stones. Under the car the pans that protect the power steeling pump and some others Catalic converter I think had small rocks in them that were bouncing up and down. I specifically remember the power steering cobver under the car four small bolts. I could reach over it and feel the rocks. Anyway I removed the cover and stones, and checked all other areas under vehicle that stones could get trapped in and be bouncing when idling or driving, hope this helps?
