My son may have damaged the clutch on his accord. In his attempt to drive in poor weather conditions, he rode the clutch and when he arrived home the car smelled like burnt clutch. He complained that the next day he was having trouble putting the car into first. When I test drove it I had no trouble getting into first gear. I checked with the dealer anyway to find out what they would charge to replace the clutch and was surprised to learn that they insist on replacing the flywheel at the same time at a total cost of $1,650. Is this necessary when the clutch has been damaged? What is the likelyhood that he didn't really damage the clutch?

Hi there,

There will be a degree of lining and pressure plate damage due to the slipping while riding the clutch, if the clutch was is good condition to start with the damage could be minimal but only time will tell, if the clutch starts to shudder this is a sign of over heating stress, the slippage he was getting would be due to overheating and now that it has cooled it will feel far more normal, you will have to drive it for a while in heavy traffic to really see if its suffered at all.

If he stated the car was hard to engage into first, and you observed burnt smell from the drivetrain. It would of been from high RPM accelration and hold.

If 1st gear grind while clutch is depressed- it could be synchros are in need of replacement-

neither way dont go to the deal for repair, there prices are way too high for the all of us who works 9-5 and dont make 50-60k's a year to afford.

Try looking for a local honda/acura specialist they can have new clutch install and machine your flywheel for 300-500$

if you want to replace the clutch go with more sturdy clutch you can try to look for 1 on Ebay. There roughly 200-300$ but I can assure you these performance clutch will service your son well considering he lit the clutch =].

Hope you the best, in getting his car back in shape*
Warm Regards,
JL feedbacks are greatly appreciated
