The first few times I depress the gas pedal it catches a little with the first downward push. This continues for a minute or two.

Hi Littledabwilldo,
This is usually caused by a dirty throttle body. The throttle valve is being restricted by build ups.
Remove the air intake hose and with some carb cleaner on a piece of rag, scrub the inside of the throttle body clean with the throttle fully opened and it should do the trick.
