2002 Honda Accord SE - Idles fine on initial startup (around 900-1000 rpm). When it drives it's fine, runs well enough. However, when I brake, the engine goes down to about 100-200 rpm idling speed, and then dies completely. Could it be a fuel filter clog? From what I understand the car has a filter screen/strainer as part of the in-tank fuel pump assembly. But isn't there also an in-line fuel filter for it? What can I do to resolve this issue? Also, I don't know if this is related, but when I drive at night, my lights dim ever so slightly when I put my windows up or put an extra load on the system. Could this be signs of an alternator problem? Are the two issues separate, or could they be symptoms of a single common problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Hi tekktronic,

When starting from cold, the rpm should be around 1500 to 2000 depending on the engine temperature. You seem to have lower than normal cold start.

After warming up if the idling speed is below 700 and/or fluctuates when A/C cuts in or out, the throttle body and IAC is partially clogged and and would result in the stalling when braking.

I would suggest cleaning the throttle body and Idle Air Control valve.

Likewise a low idling rpm would cause insufficient charging and the dimming of the lights when there is extra electrical load.

Rectify the idling speed first.
