I'm thinking this is my timing belt. I've never had it replaced (i know) and my car just did this the other night. When I come to a stop it idles REALLY low, then sputters and dies. I can restart it but cannot brake w/o revving the gas to keep the RPM's high. I'm hoping to hear I won't have to spend a small fortune on this.

Also, whenever I start my car after its been parked for any length of time there is a VERY strong gas smell outside the car that fades as the engine warms up. It's never caused any problems or gas mileage issues and the DEALER told me not to worry - but its gross smelling and CAN'T be good.

Any help would be SO great.
Thanks!!![img:3f9b4efe7a]http://www.2carpros.com/forum/automotive_pictures/360955_2000_honda_accord_1.jpg[/img:3f9b4efe7a]

Hi chickdriver,

The problem is not caused by the timing belt but the idling system. Most probably the throttle body and IAC is clogged not allowing the correct amount of air for idling and this would cause low idling and stalling.

Get the throttle body and IAC cleaned.

At your mileage, you ought to have the timing belt checked and replaced. It is overdue and when it braks, it might cause serious damages.
