Ok, I drive a 1999 honda accord lx. It has the 2.3L 4 cylinder. Shortly after i purchased the vehicle I started having some problems. Whilst I was driving the car would die. It wouldnt like electrically shut off, but mechanically i guess you would say. I would lose all throttle response while everything was still on and while in gear the car would slowly drop its RPM's. I have tried replacing ait filter, headers, exhaust system(except cat), plugs, wires, battery. I have not gotten around to checking the fuses yet. I need help though, because slowly but surely the problem is getting worse, it used to be once in a while it would do it, but now it is doing it every1/2 mile or so. can someone PLEASE help...

Hello –

Even though you have changed the plugs, wires…you need to make sure you are getting either a spark or fuel……….then if you are not getting one we can go from there.

When the car stops, use this to check for a spark.

You need to check for fuel also. One way is the info below. The next if it does die spray staring fluid in the throttle body and see if it starts for a second.

Im almost certian it is getting a spark because it will starts up immediately after, but only stay started for a split second ans sputter back to a stall... i usually have to wait a few minutes to restart but however, if i do the little fuel pump reet trick i learned at jiffy lube by turning the key to the on position and back to accessory after a few times sometimes it will work...

Hello –

Thanks for the info and understand about the spark. If it starts every single time then it would be hard to test for a spark but what you are checking here is if something is heating up and failing, then cooling for a moment and allowing a spark again.

With 181K on your car…..it may be your fuel pump that is going out. You may need to do the fuel pressure check.

Please go to Auto Zone (AZ) or O’Reilly’s (OR) and for FREE they can pull the codes to the car. Most important: Once they check your codes, if they find something and you don’t get it fixed and need to get back with us, please make sure you tell us exactly what the code was, number and all. Example, if the code was E0568 O2 Sensor bad. Then make sure you give us all of that. While there for FREE also they can bring their tester out and check your battery and alternator.

You may not be getting an engine light but check for codes as the light may have come on and reset on key cycle.
