My car use to accelerate very well and knowing that things don't work as well as when you first buy, I expect some problems. But I was wondering if this is a serious problem or not.
When I accelerate after having stopped, my car seems to have a pull or drag to it, when changing into the first gear. It also jerks hard when removing my foot from the gas when coming to a stop. Could this mean I need a new transmission?

It may but check the following first. Have you ever changed the timing belt? If not then do so pronto! It should be changed every 90000 miles - you should be on your third timing belt. If this belt breaks it will cause catostrophic engine damage....... Check the spark plugs - spark plug wires - ignition coils or distributer cap and rotor ( whichever your engine has).
Your engine has a lot to do with the shifting points of the transmission. If your timing is off from a stretched timing belt, or the engine has failing ignition parts, the computer tells the transmission false information - thus causing erratic shift points.
