My car has been running fine, but this morning the engine would not turn over. It seems like it *almost* is going to, but just won't get over that hill. I have just now tried it again, and after some persistance it DID start, but the car was shaking and a big cloud of gas came out of it. I did not drive it around, just moved it's position in the driveway. Any ideas of what might be wrong?

This may not be important, but the ignition switch died a couple months ago and we replaced it. Could that be part of the problem?

Hi mackr, Since the ignition switch has been replaced, I doubt that is the problem. The most common intermittent failure to start would be due to the fuel pump not working. The PGM-FI main relay for controlling the fuel pump is known to cause such situations. Get it checked and resolder the circuit board if they are found to have cracked joints.
