Hi, the other night I was driving around and had been turning my car on and off more than usual. I went to turn it on once more and it turned over, but once I let my hand off the key, the engine turns off and the car will not idle. The battery works, the dash lights come on, the radio comes on. I cannot operate the windows unless I am running the car with my hand on the key. Its like something isnt catching the key and keeping it in the 'run' position. I dont have a lot of experience with this problem, so I dont know whether its the ignition switch, or the starter, or what? I dont have a Haynes or Chiltons yet but I can get one. If you can help me out or point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated and will save me time and money, for I need this car to get to my job.

Hi tbrown806,

The ignition switch is faulty. Replace it or if you want to try servicing it, DIY, nobody would do it for you.

If you release the key after cranking, you would notice that the dash indicator lights are not showing.

The dash indicator lights do show when I crank it. Can it still be the ignition switch or is it more likely the starter?

Gi tbrown806,

Should not be the starter as it cranks, should be the ignition switch because you need to hold the key.

While cranking it would show all the lights, what if you let go of the key, let it return to IG II?
