Hi, I was driving my Honda Accord and after about 10 minutes the engine just cut out. I didn't lose my power steering and it just coasted along. No lights were flashing on my dashboard except the normal lights that come on when I start my car.

I pulled over and could not get it to start though it seems like it wants to. The battery is fine, the alternator is fine and there is plenty of fuel in my tank. But when I try to start it, it makes this sort of high pitched noise as if something is winching. I figured it's either my fuel pump or more likely my timing belt.

My distributor is brand new though I've had ongoing problems w/ oil in the spark plugs but it's never just stopped running. Does it sound like the timing belt?..and if so, where is it located so I can try and fix it myself.
Thanks
Greg

Hi tomasettig,

If the cranking speed seems very fast and whining, it most probably is a broken timing belt.

It is not going to be easy to replace the timing belt as you need to remove the crankshaft pulley, alternator and powersteering belts.

There are timing marks that you need to get correct before installing the belt. If you think you can do it, I will assis as best as I can.
