1993 Honda Accord

With my car parked in the sun all day without a sun shield, the interior and dash was fairly hot. I tried starting the car, the engine turned over but didn't start. I seemed as if not gas was feeding through. I called my mechanic and he told me that there is a sensor under the dash that over heated - he told me to open the doors and windows to cool the interior. A little while later(30 mins) the car started. I bought this car new and have never had this problem before.
Please explain.
