I recently purchased this car and it hadn't been driven long distances for a while. The timing belt had been recently replaced. I had the brakes done and new rotors put in. The car is a semi automatic and the mechanic recommended leaving the gear stick in D4. I noticed though that the car had trouble picking up speed like this and also "shook" when I stopped at red lights particularly the steering wheel. I experimented with the other gears an found 3 to be useless (the car won't even reach 25 mph. Same thing for 1. The only one I can drive in relatively normally is 2. Only I feel the engine straining on the highway and I have to press down hard on the pedal to speed up after a red light. I dread asking but is this the transmission? Thanks.

Sounds like it, does the engine free rev in park ok? Want to be sure the timing belt isnt off a tooth, this will make the engine slow and unresponsive. If you cant feel it shift or it doesnt move in any other gear, than it sounds like the trans is going out

Hi honda1992,

I don't think it is a semi auto, Honda don't have that for 1992 models.

Jack is more likely to be correct, the timing belt could have been installed wrongly.

Driving in 2 means driving in second speed only, definitely the engine would be roaring away.

D4 is meant to be used for general driving and if the engine vibrates till the dash shakes, it could be the engine mounts. Is the idling speed more than 700?

Is the trans throttle pressure cable adjusted properly?
Did you check the ATF level and is the fluid clean looking?
