my car made knocking noise after starting. After I turned the key off the fan, alternator and some other stuff kept runnung, I knoticed the starter and or synolid was smoking, Could the starter be the problem or did the problem cause the starter to smoke

Hi mpsmins,

I believe your ignition switch is bad and not returning to the ON position after starting. This would cause the starter to continue running after the engine is started resulting in the knocking noise and the starter smoking. Hopefully you have not damaged the starter motor.

The ignition switch has to be replaced to rectify. It would also result in the fans working after it is turned off.
