For months my tach has been going crazy, sometimes
flipping around, other times it would work fine. Now
it has stopped working. Since I want to trade in at the first of the year, can I still drive the car safely without the tach working.

Hi Aurora21,

If it is just the tachometer that is faulty, it would not pose any problem. However if the fluctuation is due to signals from the ignition coil in the distributor, it could mean the coil might fail anytime.
