When the car is in park it surges, once you put in gear it doesn't surge. The surge is irritating.

The idle air control valve would cause that problem, but try replacing the PCV valve and the hose that's attached to it first. If the PCV valve is stuck open, or the hose is brittle and broken, it would cause a vacuum leak that makes the engine surge like that.
