In the trunk on my 91 Accord there is a round plate on top of the gas tank with 3 screws and one connector. Anyone know what that is?

My fuel gauge does not work and the plate around the connector is rusty. I'm inclined to believe that the two are related????

Hi 4muddbugs,

If it is a 3 wire socket, it is the fuel gauge sending unit.

If the connection is bad, then it could be the cause.

Is there a trick to getting the connector off? There is a rubber boot over the connector that is fitted into the top. Can that be safely removed to check the circuit?

Hi 4muddbugs,

You can pull the rubber cover away but if it is too brittle, it might break into pieces.
There is a locking tab on the connector that you need to press before the socket can be pulled out.

I pulled the rubber boot just to figure out that the steel plate is just an access cover to get to the sending unit. The connector under that plate had popped loose. I reconnected the plug and everything is working fine. Thanks.
