Just had the timing belt replaced Apr. 12, 2008. After the repair, the car became very noisy. I can hear a loud humming noise even on idle mode. The repair shop said that it was the timing belt cover touching the belt inside and was causing the noise. They said I need to replace the cover because it was already bad. Is this true? Or am I being scammed for more money to get my car fixed and back to normal. I already spent over $400 dollars to get the timing belt replace. Is this just about right amount?
Thank you for your help.

It can be the right amount but I base that on not too much information. For instance, did they replace the tensioner and the water pump? The cover is a very minor piece. A defective timing cover should be detectable simply by looking at it from the top and bottom of the engine compartment. The noise you refer to could be the tensioner and not replacing it was wrong.

Yes, the mechanic replaced the following: timing belt, belt tensioner, idler pulley and water pump. the mechanic also replaced 2 serpentine belts outside. I checked the cover visually and noticed that one bolt was missing (supposedly for) fastening the bottom cover (right side), it is loose right now but still in place. One comment I received was to remove the cover and let the engine run to determine if still noisy (mechanic reason was - it is noisy because of the timing belt rubbing the cover). I'm not sure if this is true and if it is true then the cover and the belt will be damaged eventually. I was given 6 mos. or 60,000 miles warranty on their work and they recommended to replace the cover to fix the noise problem. Shall I replace the cover or not? Finally got the cost of the bottom cover, $71.50 (special order) + $15 for gaskets. Pls. advise what to do. Thank you for your help.
