1998 GMC Yukon Door lock is stuck

My door lock on driver's side wouldn't unlock so I messed with it on the outside and now it's stuck in the lock position with the door opened, and I can't close the door. How can I unjam it to put it back in the unlock position, so I can close the door?

In order to get the lock mechanism to open, you have to pull to exterior handle out abou an inch and move the mechanism to the open position. Then the door will shut and latch normally.
