2001 GMC Sierra check engine light

I have a check engine light that comes on I checked the owners manual and it said to check the gas cap to see if it was tight it wasn;t I took the cap off and put the cap back on the light stayed on also I smelled gas fumes when I took off the cap. My question is how do I turn off the light

Don't erase light until the trouble codes are retrieved. Most auto part stores will retrieve the trouble codes for you free of charge. Post codes you get and I will follow up.
