Rear door hatch lock

I have a 2002 GMC Safari with 85,000 mile and aV6 engine. My problem is the rear door hatch mechanism. Has come loose and will not open the door latch. When I push the door button you can hear the door solenoid operate but the door does not open. It sounds as if the rods that are connect to the latch lock have come loss. My question is how do I get to the door mechanism without destroying the plastic trim? I seems the hatch needs to be open to get to the mechanism. If so, how do I get the door open? To say I'm at wits end is putting it lightly. Any help is better then none.
Thanx.

Remove the grab handle on the inside of the rear door (2 -10mm bolts) Remove all screws from around inner window bezel and pop it out of the way. You should be able to see in the door to grab the rods and release the door

I have a 2000 GMC Safari (153,000 miles, V6 engine, RWD). After attempting what was suggested here to no avail, i've come seeking some assistance. I took the screws out, took the bolts out, and tried moving the rods. They wiggle, but won't open the door. I can press the button on my remote and I can hear it unlock, but I pressed the release button (with and without the key inserted) and it still will not open. Any ideas?
