GMC Safari Alternator Problem

1998 GMC Safari 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 48000 miles
My van is 12 yrs. old, but I just had the alternator replaced at 48000 mi. This did fix my problrm. Is it normal to replace it w/only 48000 mi? Same vehicle! I think I have trouble w/the multi-function switch? My wipers quit intermittently, and when they quit, the washer pump will not work either?? Everything else on the switch works when the wipers quit?? What do you think? Is it the entire switch or the wiper motor, or something else? thank you Clay Cook
