Engine light

I have a 91 chev corsica with 98000 miles on it. The engine light started coming on periodically last week. When it does, the speedometer stops working and the car hesitates for a second then drives normally. Also when the light is on, the engine idles either too high or low, and the exhaust smells like rotten eggs. Remember the light isn't on all the time, and the problems only occur when it is on. Any suggestions?

If your check engine light is coming on the car should have set a code, have a mechanic pull the code, it may save you from replacing parts you don't need. There are several different things that could cause this problem. GOOD LUCK
