Engine problem
2001 Other GMC Models Front Wheel Drive 50,000 miles

When the Malibu was about 2yrs, the coolant light came on. I found the coolant tank empty. I toped it up and noticed a very thin sludgy film on top. Ever since, it needs topping up every 3 months and the thin oil slick is visible. I can do my own repairs, but where do I start? Is this a common Malibu problem?

Yes it is. The intake manifold gasket is the most common. Gm in their infinite wisdom made these out of plastic and rubber.(It didnt work) now the replacement gasket is steel and very hard rubber. This is most likely your problem. There are rare instances when the transmission cooler inside the radiator goes bad but your transmission fluid would be low. **Look with a flashlight at the front and rear of the intake, it usually leaks at both ends. **Remember feedback and votes are greatly appreciated if I have helped you.

Thanks!
That's good (or not) to know depending on your point of view. I'll replace the gasket and let you know if it's a fix.
Again Thanks!
