The timing cannot be set without the use of a scan tool capable of doing this. This usually means a trip to a dealer..But if you are asking how to get the engine timing close because you removed the distributer - then - bring number 1 cylinder up to top dead center on the compression stroke - turn the distributers' rotor so the rotor points to number 1 cylinder contact - and drop the distributer in..
