I have a 2005 GMC Envoy 6 cyl. My engine/emission light came on and I tried to use my OBD2 scanner but it doesn't turn on when I connect the scanner. The scanner works on my '98 Ford Taurus and my '04 Honda Odyssey but I cannot get it to turn on once connected the GMC. It is connected properly. I notice that there are just 4 active pins in the GMC connector. Does this sound correct and do you know which slots each pin should be in in the GMC connector? Any advise on how to have the scanner work on the GMC or does it need a different scanner from the one I have? I thought the one I have was good for all models and this type of connector.

You need to check with the manufacter of the scan tool and see if it is CAN protocal. Which means older scan tools will not communicate with newer vehicles. In 05 they started what they call GM high speed and low speed LAN, which means the modules will communicate much faster. In 04 and older they had class 2 communication which was much slower and any scan tool would work. You need to have you scan tool updated or buy another one.
