My owner's manual says to replace the fuel filter at 72,000 miles. When I went to a mechanic (not the dealer), he refused to do it because the filter was inside the gas tank and it would be too hard to get to. I only plan on keeping the car for another 28,000 miles, and I'm not currently detecting any symptoms of a bad fuel filter. Should I go to the dealer to get this done, or ignore it?

Hello, I'm Danny.

Labor rates show the fuel filter being $25.00 to $80.00 and roughly 1.2 hours for fuel pump removal and replace. Shop labor is around $100.00 an hour depending the area/type of shop in your area. Personally I wouldn't worry about it for 28,000 mile since you're getting rid of the car unless you are noticing drivability problems or lowered gas mileage. Hope this helps and thanks for using 2CarPros.
