Hi I have a ford winstar gl, with a 3.8l motor. I have been having trouble with the rpms going at just about an idle while I am trying to drive down the road. This is also accompanied by a thick white smoke pouring out the tailpipe, and the smoke has a burned oil smell. I just got the oil changed and the mechanics said that the air filter was fine, and I am not sure what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you losing any coolant?

White smoke and burniing coolant is usually asociated with each other. You may want to pull the plugs, look at them for abnormalties and compression test the motor.

On a side note, The 1998 windstar 3.8 motors are somewhat of a timebomb. That particular one was only designed for that year and is tough to find used as they are undependable.
