1993 Ford Tempo speedometer drive gear

My 1993 tempo 4 cyl. With 89000 miles needs the speedometer drive gear replaced how do I remove the retaining screw from the retainer assembly?

Using a suitable wrench, remove the retaining screw from the speedometer drive gear retainer assemble.

That's all the book says. Looks like it is a nut from the illustration.
