EGR Problem with 01' Taurus

Check engine light came on the other day, had it scanned and was told it was the EGR valve. The guy said I could try cleaning it first before replacing it. I took it off and cleaned it even though I really didnt see any major carbon buildup. Started it up and drove it about 20 minutes at highway speeds and the check engine light hasnt gone out. I was wondering if the light goes out on its own or does the computer need to be reset? Also can I reset the computer myself? And also if the light still comes back on after the computer is reset, what could the problem be if the EGR valve moves freely?

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps.

You can unhook your battery for about 10 minutes or so and that will clear the check engine light. Once you hook your battery back up if the light comes on again have the codes checked again and it could be an oxygen sensor.
