2002 Ford Taurus SE 123,000 miles. My husband has been trying for 2 days to change my back breaks, but is unable to get the "drum" off...any suggestions he thinks it may have worn a groove in it which is causing it to stick, and not come off.

There is a small rubber plug behind the hub (next to the brake lines), remove that and there is a small wheel inside that adjusts the brake shoes in and out. You will need a flat tip screwdriver to work the small wheel to bring the shoes in off the drum. Ensure your emergency brake is not engaged and the wheels are blocked to prevent the car from moving.

We need to know if the drum is frozen to the hub or if the drum moves from the hub but sticks because it can't pass over the shoes.

If the drum moves but will not get past the shoes -- Have you turned the adjuster all the way loose to make the shoe diameter the smallest so it will be possible? Sometime you still have to work the loose drum while pulling to move the components inside so they line up better.

If the drum is frozen to the hub, it can get more complicated including the use of pullers.
