Just recently the car has been having trouble starting. I turn the key and it tries to turn over - sometimes it succeeds, sometimes it doesn't. Whether it starts or not, for a few seconds after each attempt I hear a slight rattling noise that eventually stops. Once it does start it runs fine. This started right after I had two new tires put on and the alignment done, if that helps.

This sounds like the starter drive is slipping. The tires and alignment are probably not related to the problem. I suggest that you have an experienced ear listen to it to confirm.
