standard gauge. needle only moves when heat is on. turn heat off and needle drops down.

and when the heater is turned on, is the heat blowing hot or just luke warm? is the coolant level in radiator full?

ok most likely culprit would be the engine coolant temperature sender, on the rear of engine block near the thermostat
