Heater problem
1999 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive 189000 miles

First off, thanks for the info on the thermostat/overheating problem. When I removed the flange, I found that someone previously had already removed the thermostat! I put in a new one and it does'nt overheat now. The question: is it safe to drive the car without the heater? And is it safe to use those kind that plug into your cigarette lighter? I've heard that they can be used as a temporary fix.
Thanks again for the help!

I replaced thw thermostat but still have'nt any heat. The heater ran for a couple of minutes, then, quit. The question is,is it safe to use the car for trips of 30-40 minutes? I can get an adapter that plugs into the cigarette lighter for the defroster.

Yes it is safe (for the motor) to run the car without the heater. The heater only uses the hot water from the engine to heat the inside of the car. No problem to not use this feature. As far as using an alternative heater running off your cigarette light plug, that is your choice but does not sound safe to me.
