I was just trying to answer that the people wondering about the whining noise coming from under the hood on taurus, is a transmission problem, I had a 97, and it had the whine. Then one day I was at Safeway, and I could have swore someone rear ended me. I kept driving and it kept shifting that hard. It was the trans. My fiance' has a 98 and it has just started doing the whine and it has 102,000 miles on it.

It may be on it's way to a broken oil pump drive
shaft. It seems the bearing that supports the shaft and pump impeller goes bad and causes the shaft to fail.

Drop the tranny pan, remove and cut open
the filter. If shiny metal particles are present, it is
probably the pump shaft bearing that is failing.

The epc solenoid can be a problem, but is more of a buzz noise.

Other common problems I've heard are broken foward clutch piston, broken differential, broken axle, although I have not hit them all at our shop.
