1997 Ford Taurus Automatic 181000 miles

We tried to replace the burned out light bulb behind the speedometer. In the process we removed the piece that has the gas gauge, speedomer and the tac. We had to unplug it from the two wire bundles (black on left and white on right) and disconnect the park, drive, etc. wire near the steering column to access the light bulb. When we plugged the wire bundles back in and reconnected the other wire that slips over a button of metal and tried to start the car it does not start. The only noise is a rapid clicking for the hazard lights and the lights are lit on the "check engine soon", ABS, and one other light. After the fact someone said that we should have disconnected the battery before doing what we did. We have tried to look at all the low voltage fuses- particularly the starter- everything looks ok. Could it be the high voltage fuses? If so, how do we check those? Is there something else we are missing? I am unemployed and this is my only way to get to interviews... money is tight...any help would be greatly appreciated. cell 609-456-2528

Rapid clicking is an indication of low battery
if the job was done and battery was Not disconnected chances is that the battery went low and need to get jump

best way to check fuses is by using a test light or voltmeter
make sure all connectors that was unplugged back in where they belong and on tight
