1996 Ford Taurus Car doesn't go when I stepped on the gas

When I step on the gas my car rev's up but it doesn't take off like it should. I can take my foot of the break, have the car in drive and it doesn't move forward on it's own like it should either. The other day when I was at a red light the car just started rev'ing up and down for no reason at all.

Once the car does get going it's fine in the higher gears but when slowing down or starting from a complete stop it takes forever to get going.

Check tranny fluids
also check if any of the brakes locking up
if all OK suspect and should have the tranny checked
