i have a 96 tarus we recently put a motor in it when i start it it runs like a new one i give it gas and runs fine but when i put it in gear it falls on its face misssing and backfiring

when its running try disconnecting the neutral safety switch and see if it is ok. i have seen the transmission neutral safety switch cause some crazy problems like this.
