My 1995 Taurus is getting louder and will need a new exhaust system soon. It still has the original system. I have never heard of an exhaust system lasting 15 years. I live in Atlanta, so no really cold temps or salt on the road. The car has been garaged 95% of the time. Was the original system stainless steel?

A stainless steel exhaust was an option on those fords. Yours may or may not be stainless steel. Nevertheless, it is not uncommon for a non-stainless steel exhaust system to last as long as yours did. Exhaust systems (as you probably know) get extremely hot, so water usually evaporates before it causes damage to the external parts -- but when the exhaust system cools down - and - the conditions are right - condensation inside of the system is usually does the damage. Being that yours is in a garadge 95% of the time contributed to the long life of this exhaust system. Almost all exhaust systems now-a-days are stainless steel.
