Excellent condition, well maintained in and out, only 80,000 miles. Blew a head gasket! Unexpected shock. What should I do? I don't think the overall value of the car warrants paying for the expensive repairs. I wish a home mechanic would buy the Taurus from me, then work in his spare time to repair the engine gaskets. He would then have a very nice car.I could try to do the repairs myself; highly experienced. The engine truly purred before this. Do you think I could also have a cracked block? Do you know anywhere, anyway I can get rid of the car? New tires and wheels, new radiator, and all other parts/features in great condition. Body/paint too. I REALLY need help!

Thank You,

Jeff

A bit more information is needed.

Which engine do you have? The 3.0 or the 3.8?

The head gasket can be an expensive repair if you have a shop repair it. A lot of labor is involved. But, this is not beyond the scope of the home mechanic. Some things are a bit hard to reach, but not impossible.

A cracked block is very unlikely. I have been working on Ford cars for many years, and have never encountered a cracked block so far.

As to the value of the car, you have to consider many things. A good solid car with no cosmetic problems is a big asset - regardless of age. General condition is the most important factor unless you are only trying to resell it. Cost of replacement is another factor. Can you replace the car with an equally satisfying car for the cost of the repair? As it has always been, cars are not a good investment. You have to drive the value out of them! I once bought a new taurus and then drove it for 20 years! I got my money's worth from that one. But from a value point of view, I could not have ever recovered my investment any other way.

If you truly want to get rid of the car, email me with your location and I will try to help if you are within reasonable distane of me.

For your reply! 3.8 liter V6. I am in Pasadena, CA. 91101. I am considering several options. I am very glad to hear that a cracked block is unlikely. I have always loved the comfort, and drivability of this car. I like Fords too.
