I recently purchased a 1993 Taurus GL from a private seller which I immediately took to for emission testing. Of course it failed. The reading showed failure for NO-Nitric Oxide and the possible culprits could be either the EGR valve, O2 sensor, catalytic converter, timiing, fuel injectors, or engine cooling system. As I am unaware how long the car has been sitting I decided to follow the tech's advise and "blow out" the motor to heat it up as it were. The car was driven back and forth to work for three days via the highway with no problems except for the Service Engine light coming on once in a while which I thought would be reset on the computer once the emission was passed. On the 3rd day while coming home I noticed large quantities of white smoke coming from the tailpipe and the car seemed to lose compression. No engine noise, no apparent leaks, and the car never stalled. I drove it another 2 or three miles and the smoke seemed to minimize and compression returned a bit but there is still some smoke coming from the tailpipe. What is this a symptom of and what would be your professional advice in reparing? Any advice you may have will be greatl appreciated.
