Lack of power - sometimes

I have a 2000 Ford Ranger, 3 litre, 5 speed, extended cab with 87000 miles. My commute to work takes me up a hill that is about 3/4 mile long and pretty steep. Sometimes I can pull this hill in 5th gear without any speed loss. Other times I have to downshift to 4th in order to maintain my speed. Can you tell me what my problem might be? It also seems to effect my gas mileage in a negative manner when I lose my power.
Thank you.

5th gear is a overdrive gear, numerically lower number, meant for cruising speed. Depending on the hill size, it's probably more beneficial to put it in 4th gear. Being in 5th will cause more strain/work on the motor and plus your probably mashing the gas all the way down to try to make it go up hill resulting in less mpg. Hope this helps.
