I noticed the temp gauge flucuating from low to mid while driving once the engine is warm. never goes above mid so I dont think it's overheating but it's winter and the outside temps have been cool. Coolent level seems normal. Heater seems to operate normally.

Check the coolant level, and may have some trapped air, with cold engine, remove the radiator cap, start truck,, squeeze upper radiator hose a few time, fill to capacity, reinstall cap! Other possibilty is sending unit weak, or gauge!

check the wire by the sending unit, to see if it is touching a bare spot. if it is ok then the problem seems to be in the thermastat, where it is binding up a little and need to be replaced.
