I NEED THE HEAD GASKETS REPLACED ON MY FORD RANGER THE SHOP DOING THE WORK WANTS $1400.00 TO DO THE JOB IS THIS A GOOD ESTIMATE? IT SOUNDS LIKE A LARGE AMOUNT TO DO THE JOB.

The price you mention is really not all that far from what I would expect. Depending if you have a 3 or 4 liter engine the labour times are about 6 for the 3 lire, and about 9 Hhs for the 4 liter, add to this the VRS gasket set anywhere around the $200-250 mark. Replace the coolant, engine oil, filter and there will be a minimum of 2 head crack test and re machining cost and any other cleaning & consumable charges, the price is not all that bad, these days the bulk of the cost id tied up with the labour component, so ask for a break down of all costs and I feel that you will see that you have been charged accordingly.
