When my truck is at running temp, and on a hot day it will make a loud howling sound from the air filter box. when its on a steep hill it will howl then die. as soon as i give it some gas, raising the rpm it will stop howling.

The howling sounds like it's coming from your intake, but it's actually caused by your Idle Air Control sensor. I'm pretty sure that's the problem, you can get one at most autoparts for about $50
