1996 Ford Ranger timing belt

timing belt broke so was unable to line marks up before pulling old belt. I lined up cam sproket mark with arrow, and lined crankshaft pulley mark with TDC mark. Is spark timing controlled by crankshaft? If so, how do I know if crankshaft is at TDC-compression(spark firing) or at TDC-exhaust(no spark)?

when looking at the engine from the front take out the first sparkplug on the left. then turn crankshaft till piston is at the top of the cylinder. now place timing belt on pulley and you should be set.
