Electrical problem
1994 Ford Ranger 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

The truck will idle fine and it is not making any noises. Once you start driving it will only go about 10 miles down the road before it just dies at the speed you were going. It does not do anything else, there is no noise when this happens, it loses power steering and the nreak gets heavy. You can hear the fuel pump running when you're supposed to and the distributor is still in good working condition and has no problems. After you sit for about 5 minutes once it has died it will start right back up and then die again after you go another 10 miles. What could this be? Could it be the mass air flow sensor?

Hi jennh,

Thank you for the donation.

When the engine stalled, does the dash indicators lights comes on?

Symptoms seems to indicate a power interruption and the ignition switch could be faulty causing the problem.

When engine stalled and you were not able to start it, you need to perform diagnostics then. Check if sparks are available or if fuel is being supplied to the rails.

No lights came on to indicate anything and the check engine light never came on but when we ran diagnostics a few days ago one of the codes that came back said it was the MAF sensor. I can run the test again and see what comes up. Would it help iff the MAF sensor was cleaned any way?

If none of the indicator lights are coming on, then you have a bad ignition switch.

Cleaning the MAF would help in the idling and might improve on the performance. Since an error has been detected with the MAF, clean it and check the harness connector for contaminations and looseness.
