1993 Ford Ranger whines

hello...the truck whines when idle and during travel..not when in park or nuetral..some mechanics have suggested the torque converter and others say it needs a filter/fluid change, however, all want me to have them do a complete over-haul...i do not have the money to spend on that for a 93...can you please help by suggesting any advice...thank you sooo much, Tara

Hi Tara,

The symptoms points to something in the trans assy. It would be impossible to find the cause without testing.

Does the noise comes on in reverse?

Does it whine through all the various gears while driving and does the noise level change with each gear?

Is the ATF in good condition? Clear color, dark etc.

How long has noise appeared and anything done prior to it happening?
