I have a 1991 Ford Ranger XLT with the 4.0 V6. It has an automatic transmission and is 2wd. The starter went out on me. I went and bought a new one and put it on. The truck fired right up, but the starter would not disengage. I called the parts store and they gave me a new one. I put it on and had the same problem. The started didn't have shims on it when I took the original off. Does anyone have any ideas on how to correct this problem?

The starter relay could be sticking and engaging the starter as it fires up. 2-new starter and still the doing the same

The starter went out on me, What happened that you need to replace it. Is it about noise/won't crank engine over or what.

My starter just quiit. I pulled up to the gas pump and turned my truck off, and it didn't start again. Just a dead click. I had the old one tested at Advance Auto and it tested bad. I have tried several starters including one for a manual transmission. Nothing has worked so far. The starter the computer calls for will start my truck, but the bendix will not disengage the fly wheel on the front end. I have another starter and a shim. The parts store said, if this didn't work I should come get a refund and go to the Ford dealership and get a Motor Craft part.

How long since you had this truck? Maybe they put in a wrong flexplate.

For all the years I've been working on FORD products I've never use a shim/s. On GM its nothing new-its make to make noise.

I'll be waiting for the OEM
